Operating Modes
StemX offers two distinct modes for different workflows.
LIVE MODE
Real-Time DAW Processing
Live mode processes audio from your DAW in real-time. Insert StemX on a track or bus, and it will separate the incoming audio into six stems as it plays.
Use Cases
- Monitor individual stems while mixing
- Mute vocals for karaoke-style playback
- Isolate drums for tempo analysis
- Rebalance a finished stereo mix in real time
Performance
Live-mode speed depends on the execution provider. GPU backends and Apple Silicon run fastest; CPU is the fallback and is slower. See the GPU guide to choose a backend.
Tip: For lowest latency, enable GPU acceleration and use a buffer size of 256 or 512 samples in your DAW.
FILE MODE
Load, Separate, Export
File mode lets you load audio files directly into StemX, separate them, preview individual stems, and export them as separate files.
Workflow
- 1Click Load File and select your audio (WAV, MP3, FLAC, etc.)
- 2StemX automatically begins separation (progress shown)
- 3Use transport controls to preview and solo individual stems
- 4Click Export to save stems as individual files

- Create acapellas from finished tracks
- Extract drum loops for sampling
- Prepare stems for remixes
- Isolate bass lines for transcription
Switching Modes
You can switch between Live and File mode at any time using the mode selector in the top-left of the plugin window. Your current settings (stem levels, mutes, etc.) are preserved when switching.
